Administrative Training and Professional Development takes place throughout the year in an effort to keep our employee’s knowledge of trends and changes relevant and up to date, which in turn ultimately delivers benefits to the school, our employees, and their professions.
This month, we’d like to shine our spotlight on Ms. Wilma Lumpkin – one of the friendly faces at our front desk, who many of our families have become familiar with and fond of. As a three-year team member at the Conservatory, Wilma’s dedication to providing a welcoming experience for our students and families is like none other, and we are happy to share with you some of her favorite things about being part of the team at Colorado Springs Conservatory.
Wilma, tell us a little about your background:
I am from Southern California and am a retiree of the Los Angeles police department. I moved to Colorado Springs in March 2018. Today, I am a certified Zumba, Zumba Gold, and Pound instructor. I am also a Certified Silver Sneakers instructor. I’ve worked at the front desk of the Colorado Springs Conservatory for about three years.
What are some of your favorite things about being a team member at Conservatory?
1 – We are a large, positive, welcoming family where everyone is special.
2 – The mentors at the Conservatory are the best at what they do – The care, quality, and expertise they put into their teaching, the patience they take with each student, and the great relationship with the parents is like a fine-tuned machine, working together in the best interest of the students.
3 – I love riding along on the creative journey of the students as they practice – whether instruments or vocals! I get to witness them writing songs – line by line, note by note. Then enjoying their finished products, their performances, is one of the most awesome things I have ever experienced.
4 – Watching the students develop and mature.
Do you come from a musical background?
Yes – if singing in the church choir and beating the tambourine counts! =)
Why do you believe music/performance education is important?
Music and performance education is important because it provides young people with an additional platform to develop their creativity; a way to express themselves in a positive and constructive manner. But most of all, music and performance education allows the students to be seen and heard.
In your experience, what has been the impact of the Colorado Springs Conservatory on the CO Springs community and the youth of the Pikes Peak region?
In my opinion, the Colorado Springs Conservatory has provided a positive impact on the Colorado Springs community and the youth of the Pikes Peak region by providing a place where our youth can be introduced to, trained in, and participate in several structured components of the fine arts.
What is Wilma’s Road Trip Playlist?
Gospel music Contemporary Christian Old School R&B Smooth Jazz Country Western and since working at the Conservatory, I now listen to some Opera music, as well!
