George Preston joined the staff of KCME as the General Manager on June 17, 2013. He came to KCME from WFMT in Chicago, where he served as afternoon drive host and host and producer of the internationally syndicated “Lyric Opera of Chicago Broadcasts.”
Before moving to Chicago, George was at WNYC, New York City’s primary NPR affiliate, where he most recently served as Music Director, supervising the music staff and producing a wide array of live concert broadcasts, festivals, and specials.
A native of West Virginia, George holds music degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, New England Conservatory, and Boston University. He accidentally fell into a broadcast career some 30 years ago at WXCR, Safety Harbor, Florida, a commercial classical station serving the Tampa Bay market. He worked at WBUR in Boston for 11 years as a program host and producer, Music Director, and Assistant Program Director.
A former singer and actor, George performed operatic roles including Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Mercutio in Gounod’s Romeo & Juliet, and Demetrius in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His theatre work ranges from Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate to Orgon in Tartuffe. (202)
