Preparatory Program Details

Piano

This weekly piano class offers students the chance to grow as both performers and musicians through a mix of performance and special topic sessions. Once a month, the class transforms into a performance masterclass, where students share their music with peers and a mentor, building confidence and learning to give and receive constructive feedback. In other weeks, students will explore a variety of engaging topics such as piano literature, duets and ensembles, accompanying, keyboard skills, and pedagogy. Students will also enjoy exciting performance opportunities throughout the year, including a mid-semester recital and Holiday Extravaganz in the fall, as well as Piano Night in March and the Conservatory Festival at the end of the spring semester. Together, these experiences foster well-rounded musicianship and a deeper connection to the piano.

Voice

Preparatory group voice: Students have full confidence and understanding of independent parts and navigating sheet music. Through a master class- style approach, students will prepare pieces for peer feedback, theatre/ audition preparation, and real-world experience. Students will learn about the industry with a professional mindset or focus. Students can discuss a variety of styles and genres and utilize their own vocal versatility. Students will primarily prepare private lesson repertoire and Fall/ Spring Theatre repertoire.

Theatre

Preparatory Theatre is perfect for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts. This class seamlessly mixes classwork with performing opportunities.  Students will study acting, movement, voice, text analysis, choreography, and everything in between in order to become true triple threats.  This class will result in two fully-produced productions each year.  This year, those productions are Anastasia (Dec 5- 7) and Metamorphosis (April 24-26).

Composition

This class gives students the opportunity to build their knowledge of harmony and chord progressions, improve their writing for different instruments, and take on more ambitious projects such as scoring film and video game scenes and composing for ensembles. Students in this class will be prepared to study composition at the college level, including studying advanced music theory and building a portfolio of work.

Songwriting

For the more experienced songwriter, this class offers a chance to refine their abilities, advance their expression, and create more meaningful songs. With a focus on building a body of work, students can expect to create an album worth of songs over the course of the year, with opportunities to record their songs in the Conservatory’s recording studio.

Music Production

This class builds on the fundamentals, offering a deeper dive into the world of modern production, focusing on sampling, drum design, advanced plugins, and the entire process of recording and mixing a release-ready album. Students in this class will be prepared to study engineering and/or production at the college level and gain experience in professional real-world settings by assisting with audio production at Conservatory events.

Ensemble

Ready to join the band? This performance-focused class gives students the opportunity to play with each other and with our mentors, who are seasoned pros themselves. This class provides a balance between the educational experience of rehearsal and the practical experience (and fun!) of performing in front of an audience. Preparatory Ensemble is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists, and includes music of many styles, including rock, indie, modern pop, and jazz standards. This class offers a multitude of performance opportunities both at the Conservatory and beyond, giving students the chance to play at venues throughout Colorado Springs.
