Longtime community leader and lover of the arts, Donna Nelson assumes the role as Board Chair of the Colorado Springs Conservatory. She has been on the Board of Directors for three years , though her devotion to the organization goes back over a decade. Donna follows Mike Jorgensen who will stay on as immediate past Chair. The Executive committee members are newly appointed Tamara Moore, Vice Chair; Sherri Newell Wilkinson, Secretary; George Garro, Treasurer. Members at Large include newest members Greg Luczak of Coldwell Banker, Dr. Sentwali Bakari of UCCS, Wayne Paton, recently retired from ENT; Colonel Ron Fitch, Former Garrison Commander of Fort Carson as well as longtime members, Michelle Talarico, C.J. Moore and Linda Weise.
Donna plans to focus on bringing the organization to new heights as the Conservatory enters it’s 25th year of service in the region. The Conservatory is a preparatory performing arts immersion program and serves over 1,000 students annually in it’s various programs.
Exuding courage, confidence, and character, Donna Nelson is a strong advocate for the City of Colorado Springs and works tirelessly to include women and minorities in everything she does. She serves as a Program Manager for the Mayor’s of the Spirit of the Springs initiatives program. She also serves as the City Liaison for the city’s international sister city program, Colorado Springs Sister Cities International, overseeing seven international city programs that focus on international business and cultural exchange. She has traveled to three of our international sister cities, to include representing and speaking on behalf of our Mayor in Smolensk, Russia in September 2017.
Donna constantly works on being the best community leader that she can be. She holds many positions in several organizations including, but not limited to Colorado Springs Conservatory Board Chair, TOP CLASS Toastmasters Founding President, Pikes Peak United Way’s Women United Immediate Past Board Chair, Colorado Springs (CO) Links Inc., Founding Member and Program chair, Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce Rising Professionals Past Board Chair, Urban League of the Pikes Peak Region Past Board Chair, Pikes Peak United Way Loaned Executive, Citizen Soldier Connect Board Member At-Large, and COPPeR (Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region) past Board Member. Most recently, Donna was appointed by the Governor of Colorado to the State Board of Marriage and Family Therapists Examiners!
Donna began her career as a Medical NCO in the United States Army, serving for nine years in the military. She was stationed overseas three times, including a six-month tour in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm/Shield. Donna has received numerous military and community awards, including the Liberation of Kuwait and the Southwest Asia Service Medal, Colorado Girl Scouts Women of Distinction, Athena Women in Business Award Nominee, Colorado Springs Rising Professionals Mentor of the Year, Leadership Pikes Peak Graduate, Colorado Springs Leadership Institute Graduate, and 3 time winner of Security Service’s Volunteer of the year.
Donna has lived in Colorado Springs for 25 years, has one daughter, Jasmine, and 2 extremely smart grandchildren, Soulyman and Fatima, who live in Rockford, IL.
