Group Voice

Group classes are to promote mutual depth of knowledge and understanding of  theory and sheet music. Students should be able to discuss music using leveled terminology based on the RCM theory curriculum. In group classes special topics will be discussed to increase awareness of vocal care, musical/ tonal/ and harmonic blending.

This is also a time to discuss Italian musical terminology, understanding of time signatures, keys, rhythmic questions, measure identification, etc.  By the end of the program students should feel confident in listening and singing independent parts and navigating their sheet music.

Private - Beginner Voice

In beginner voice, students discover their voice type, unlock proper resonance, and learn to confidently learn to identify their vocal range. Chest voice, Head voice, and mixed voice are all introduced to discover which muscles and resonators should be used to produce high notes and low notes.

Students will also learn the keys of the piano, matching their voice to the pitch using healthy vocal placements, inflection, and vowel adjustments. Students will also be placed in their appropriate technique level as well as theory/ aural training level. Students will prepare small, leveled vocal warm ups/ exercises, scales, and intervals (distance between two notes) as well as two contrasting performance pieces by the end of each semester.

Basic knowledge of theory- staff identification as well as reading rhythms from quarter notes through 16th notes and coinciding rests will be introduced if not already learned. In this level, students should be able to blend matching pitches in unison (same note).

Private - Intermediate Voice

In intermediate voice, students will expand their range through working though their passagio (vocal block) to develop a stronger mixed voice. Students should be able to follow along in sheet music, locating road maps, repeats, codas and discuss musical markings within their piece of music.

Students should prepare at least 1 piece in a different language of choice by the end of the year. Learning a new language unlocks different vowels, diction, and placement for classical resonance and healthy singing. Students will also prepare leveled vocal warm ups/ exercises as well as higher leveled scales and intervals separate from their chosen technical repertoire.

Students will also sing rounds with teachers to promote independent parts, confidence, blend, and active listening to harmony.

Private - Advanced Voice

By advanced voice, students should feel confident preparing small performances, audition planning, and gig preparation. Students should have higher leveled awareness of their instrument, range and limitations, and selecting repertoire with guidance suitable for their instrument.

Students should recognize their pathway and passion as an artist and make musical choices based on their personal strengths and artistic influences. Music of styles- classical, foreign language, jazz, pop, theatre, or rock is all encouraged. At this stage, the voice has built versatility and agility, color, nuance, and range. Students have the highest level of aural skills and theory and are able to confidently sing intervals and vocal warm ups in any key.

Students have full awareness and knowledge of the literacy in their sheet music and are able to explain the full meaning and concepts of their performed pieces. Students should feel excited, beginning to prepare and be ready to take on the world in high school and beyond.

Exploratory Group Voice

Students can confidently identify vocal type and discuss healthy ways to achieve resonance and vocal range. Students will learn about instrument care, vocal warm ups, and singing games to comfortably sing pitches with appropriate projection and chest/mix/head-voice placement.
