Jacob Herold

Jacob Herold grew up in Colorado Springs, where he took up saxophone study at age ten. His musical craft developed under the mentorship of Springs- and Denver-area musicians Keith Oxman, Paul Romaine, and the faculty of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts. Before leaving home, Jacob began professional freelance work, merited selection as a Telluride Jazz Celebration All-Star, earned the top soloist award at the New Orleans Ovation Music Festival, and received the Danny Stevenson Memorial Scholarship Award from the Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society. In 2003, he moved to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music, where he studied performance and composition with the institute’s prestigious faculty. While in Boston, he was recognized by the YoungArts program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

Jacob has led a variety of bands which have performed at several Colorado music venues and events, including the Red Note Jazz Fest, Pikes Peak Jazz Festival, PPJASS Jazz in the Parks, Imagination Celebration, Dazzle Jazz Club, and Smokebrush Theater. Recordings of his have received radio features on KRCC and KCME, and his quartet’s on-air broadcast at KUVO was included in the station’s “Live at the Oasis” compilation series. During his career, Jacob has appeared with Convergence, Ken Walker, the Alan Joseph Trio, Eddie Jones, Kim Stone, the Springs Contemporary Big Band, and conducted multiple contracts as a show-band musician with Carnival Cruise Lines. Now established back in Colorado, Jacob performs with area bands, maintains a teaching studio, and serves as an instructor for programs like Jazz Aspen Snowmass In-Schools and the CCJA Jazz Boot Camp. He is in his final semester of jazz studies at the University of Colorado, where he holds residency in its Center for Arts, Media, and Performance. Jacob also currently participates in the Boulder Laptop Orkestra, works on his own folk jazz project, and continues a procrastinated effort to climb each Fourteener in Colorado.
