Grammy Award Winning Jazz Flautist, Dave Valentin Gives Benefit Concert in Colorado Springs

For over two decades, Dave Valentin has graced the stage at the Antler’s Hilton. This dynamic performer has wowed audiences with the brilliance of his playing as well as his persona. This year was no exception. On Saturday, January 26th Valentin played to yet another sold out hall in a concert to benefit the Pikes Peak Community Foundation Fund for the Arts, FutureSelf and the Colorado Springs Conservatory. Over 600 people came to hear Dave and his quartet from New York City, drummer Robby Ameen, percussionist Richie Flores, bass player Lincoln Goines, and pianist Bill O’Connell. Except for Flores, all have played with Valentin since the 1970s. This was only the second time in over twenty years that Dave has played with his regular band here in the Springs. It was a memorable evening of great jazz. The Highlight was the finale with the Conservatory students joining Dave on stage for a rousing rendition of ‘oye como va’.

The night before Dave gave a Master Class at the Pikes Peak Center, Studio Bee. With over 100 in attendance, nearly everyone was playing by the end of the class. A combination of life stories and jazz studies, the class had something for everyone. The thrill of young people begin able to perform with this legend was overwhelming for some who just could not muster up the courage to do so. Others had no problem getting up and sharing musical ideas. Prizes were given out to those in attendance. They included gifts from the Citadel Mall, Cinemark and the Conservatory.
